Why are you supposed to pull against the direction of hair growth when waxing?

I haven't ever waxed yet, but it just seems to make more sense to pull in the direction of hair growth, that they would come out easier and it would hurt less. Can someone please explain?

Well, this depends on what you mean by "against the hairgrowth". if you mean, the way the hair naturally lays as being the direction of the hair growth, then you're incorrect. lol. sometimes, you can just yank on it and it'll hurt like heck, but not pull out. I see where you're coming from, but you must pull against the hairgrowth.

your supposed to pull away from the way it grows.

Actually, it wouldn't be as effective. When you spread the hot or cold wax on the hairs, you do it in the direction of the hair growth. So pulling on it in the same direction would do nothing but hurt.
