My hair's at my waist. I drink protein shakes (Six Starr from Wal-mart is really good), eat a lot of proteins, take multi-vitamins, and exercise regularly. The exercise DOES make a difference. I don't know exactly why, though. Also braiding your hair at night works pretty well. Don't know if you want to try that though, since you're a guy. I always wash my hair in the morning, though, so it's always straight.
Good luck.

-drink lots of water (at least 8 glasses a day)
-If you tend to have dry hair, shampoo as little as possible (once or twice a week maximum) You can get hair wet still in the shower and massage conditioner in as you normally would. This will make a huge different and will strengthen your hair.
-Make sure you eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables so you are getting all your essential nutrients. A few specific things to increase you consumption of are: anti-oxidants vitamin E.

"The best diet for your hair is the same as that for your general health. Be sure to get plenty of nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains and go easy on saturated fats. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, hair needs a steady supply of protein. Malnutrition and even heavy dieting can cause hair loss, but don't go overboard in planning a high-protein diet to save your head. Nutritional expert Carl Pheiffer of the Brain-Bio Institute in Princeton, New Jersey, found that although hair requires protein, it is actually more likely to fall out when your diet is more than 20 percent protein.
